The Story Behind Kampong Sambal: A Journey of Roots and Flavors
Kampong Sambal is more than just a brand—it’s a story of family, tradition, and the deep connection between food and home.

Mama, Sa’adiah, grew up in the quaint kampong of Kampong Selabin, where life was simple, and the air was rich with the aroma of freshly cooked meals. Her childhood was filled with the sounds of chickens clucking, the laughter of neighbors, and the irresistible fragrance of nenek’s sambal simmering over the fire. While Mama didn’t start cooking until her 20s, her culinary journey was inspired by nenek, whose recipes were a treasure trove of heritage and love.
In 1999, Sa’adiah and her husband, Mohamad Noor, made the brave decision to move their family to Canada when Mohamad Noor received a job opportunity overseas. While embracing their new home, they remained deeply connected to their roots. Mama Sa’adiah honed her culinary skills and started a catering business, sharing the vibrant flavors of Malaysia with the Canadian community.
The success of their catering led to the launch of a food truck, where one dish consistently stole the spotlight: their homemade sambal. Customers raved about its perfect balance of heat, sweetness, and depth of flavor, urging them to jar it up for others to enjoy.
Inspired by this overwhelming feedback and their Canadian journey, the family set out to create a healthier version of their beloved sambal. They crafted it with no MSG or preservatives, focusing on authenticity and quality while catering to modern, health-conscious palates.
Today, Kampong Sambal represents the full-circle journey of the family. It’s a celebration of their roots, bringing the flavors of their childhood back to Malaysia and Singapore while sharing it with the world.
Every jar of Kampong Sambal carries the warmth of a family’s love and the timeless taste of tradition, reimagined for a new generation.
